The Hugh Lane Gallery will present an evening of art, music, performance and more inspired by modern and contemporary art through an imaginative programme of in-gallery activity as well as opportunities for enjoying the collection and our temporary exhibition Bones in the Attic now on view. From an exciting live music programme to sketching, pop up art talks, embossed printmaking, a 'Lucky Cat’ performance with performance artist Victoria Callinan and more there's lots to enjoy on the night. 5.30pm-6pm Laura Ann Brady is an alternative folk artist

6.15pm-6.45pm Sean Mac Erlaine’s work intersects folk, free improvisation, jazz and traditional music.

7pm-7.30pm Blind Stitch is a project which features the music of Kelvin Murphy, a celebrated cellist, multi-instrumentalist, composer

7.45pm-8.15pm Ellie O’Neill and Sean Carpio’s collaboration explores play and presence in music.

8.30pm-9pm Sharon Phelan will perform an experimental set with analog synth.

9.10-9.40pm Thomas Haugh will be performing a set of ciné-folk tunes on Tsymbaly and Zither

Pop Up music by Max Crowley, Uilleann piper as well as Bill and Sheila on banjo and fiddle will also take place intermittently throughout the evening in spaces throughout the Gallery.

Laura Ann Brady is an alternative folk artist and drama therapist from Dublin. She experiments  with folk and Irish traditional songs in her work and this informs her own process of song writing. Laura plays various instruments including autoharp and piano and enjoys the ritual of layering vocals and sounds that invoke memories and stir the heart and soul. Laura will play a solo set on culture night including new songs from her upcoming EP. If her live shows communicate any sort of message it is “Vulnerability is strength.” Laura is releasing her upcoming EP One Morning on Culture Night 2022.

Seán Mac Erlaine is a composer, musician and mastering engineer. Recognised as one of Ireland's most forward-thinking creative musicians, he has worked internationally with many leading lights of music today. Seán's work intersects folk, free improvisation, jazz and traditional music. This Culture Night 2022 performance features piano performance using John Cage's preparations as a starting point for improvisations which include woodwinds and live electronics.

Blind Stitch is a project which features the music of Kevin Murphy, a celebrated cellist, multi-instrumentalist, composer and songwriter from Cork Ireland. He is also a founding member of critically acclaimed Irish experimental bands Slow Moving Clouds and Seti The First. Blind Stitch is due to release its debut album – The Emperor’s Lung in July 2022. He has also featured as a guest musician with many Irish and international artists such as The National, Bon Iver, Jenny Lewis, Lisa Hannigan, Gavin Friday, Rick Danko Seamus Fogarty, Adrian Crowley and Dave Gahan of Depeche Mode. He will be playing songs from his new album at The Hugh Lane Gallery on Culture Night.

Ellie O’Neill is an emerging artist from Co. Meath. Her multifaceted practice includes working as a collaborator and soloist, and she is currently recording her debut album, due for release in the near future. Ellie’s primary solo artistic output focuses on songwriting that explores intimacy, love, loss, and queerness. Ellie will perform with multi-instrumentalist and artist Sean Carpio. Sean's practice and interests are deep, diverse and never confined to one genre. The pair have been recording and arranging together in recent months and performing at Cairde Festival, and All Together Now. Their collaboration is founded on a shared understanding of the importance of both play and presence in music.

Sharon Phelan’s multidisciplinary practice spans writing, composing, performance and installation with a particular interest in sound, voice and listening. For Culture Night at the Hugh Lane she will perform an experimental set with analog synth.

Thomas Haugh is an Irish musician, with solo works under the The Albertus Seba and collaborative works under Set The First alongside Slow Moving Clouds Cellist –Kevin Murphy. He has written music for film and tv, including Tomato Red by Juanita Wilson, and Natan by Paul Duane. Known for his use of rarely used acoustic instruments such as Zither, Tsymbaly (Ukranian Cimbalom) and Hurdy-Gurdy, Haugh will be performing a set of ciné-folk tunes on Tsymbaly and Zither, with minimal use of electro acoustics adding a subtle blend of shimmer and disintegration to the fragile atmospheres on display.

Max Crowley started off playing the tin whistle when  about at the age of 10 and after a few years moved on to the Uilleann pipes. He has been playing on and off since then and recently started writing and producing his own music. He will play a set of jigs and an air called the Bright Lady.

Bill and Sheila will perform a set of fiddle/ banjo music, mainly drawn from the repertoire of the Old-Time String Band Music tradition. This tradition stretches back to the early years of USA history and has both African and European influences at its core, the banjo having African origins and the fiddle European. Bill Whelan (clawhammer banjo) has been promoting and playing American Roots music in Ireland for ‘more years than he cares to remember’. His Saturday afternoon Old-Time String Band session, held in the legendary Cobblestone pub, is now in its 25^th year. Classically trained violinist Sheila Sullivan has played and recorded with a diverse range of bands, with musical styles from indie through to folk. She spent many Saturdays as a fan of the old-time session before being encouraged by Bill to bring her violin along and join in.
