Queen of Puddings Music Theatre presents
SVADBA – WEDDING by Ana Sokolovic
Toronto’s Queen of Puddings Music Theatre presents SVADBA – WEDDING, a virtuosic tour de force for six female opera singers, a cappella, and sung in Serbian. Commissioned from Canadian-Serbian composer Ana Sokolovic, Svadba was conceived as both a fully-staged operatic work and a stand-alone concert work. The action takes place the night before a fiancée, Milica, leaves for her wedding. Her girlfriends keep her company all night long and engage in raucous ‘girltalk’, invoking pagan rituals as they prepare her for the impending marriage. Using existing Slavic/Balkan peasant folk tales, myths and traditions as her text source, the composer draws on her native Balkan folk music as a source of inspiration and transforms the music and text into her own unique onomatopoeic language. The all-Canadian cast on this tour is led by Irish conductor Dáirine Ní Mheadhra and other tour performances include Paris, Orléans, and the Bemus Festival in Belgrade. In June 2012 Svadba-Wedding won Toronto’s Dora Award for Outstanding New Opera.
