Bacons Vibrant Colours
|
A palette is something artists use to mix their colours. To the right look at Edouard Manet’s painting, Portrait of Eva Gonzalez. In this painting you will see how an artist uses a palette, easel and a wide range of brushes. Francis Bacon used the walls and door of his studio as a palette where he could test and mix his vibrant colours and these walls were also brought to Dublin and are part of the reconstructed studio. Look at the range of colours - pink, blue, red, orange and white are among many other colours that Francis Bacon used. In some places the texture of the paint on the wall is amazing as he added layer upon layer of thick paint. Francis Bacon loved adding texture to his paintings and he sometimes used cut up pieces of his old corduroy trousers or sweaters and even dust swept up from the floor and pressed them to the wet paint to give them a variety of interesting patterns. |
