A Study of Relationships between Inner and Outer Space (1969, Dir. David Lamelas) Duration: 24 mins. Introduced and followed by a discussion led by Alice Butler, writer and co-curator of aemi.

Free, no booking required.

David Lamelas’ first film, A Study of Relationships between Inner and Outer Space analyzes the architectural, social, climatic, or sociological data that make up the exhibition’s spatial environment, that of the institution and its geographical location. Beginning with the empty exhibition hall, the description is neutral and analytical. It progresses in ever larger circles, placing emphasis on all the important functional elements, from the electronic devices in the exhibition space, to the city’s traffic regulation to the communication and information media and finally, to the climatic conditions of the London environment. The film concludes with six interviews regarding the big news item of the day: the future “landing” of the first men on the moon.

To The Editor Of Amateur Photographer (Dirs. Luke Fowler, Mark Fell, 2014) Dur. 68 minutes.

Introduced and followed by a discussion led by Alice Butler, writer and co-curator of aemi. For a synopsis of this film please see hughlane.ie/education. Free, no booking is required.

Luke Fowler and Mark Fell’s film revolves around the testimonies and collected documents linked to the complex and often contested history of Pavilion, Europe’s first feminist photography centre. To the editor of Amateur Photographer examines a radical shift in photography whilst also foregrounding the problems of presenting history through archival fragments and personal recollections.Operating out of former park premises in Leeds, Pavilion was formed in 1983 with the stated aim of being the first photography centre dedicated to representing and supporting the production of women’s photography. Against a backdrop of heightened social, political and economic conflicts, the Pavilion set about turning the prevailing patriarchal image culture inside-out.

World Philosophy Day - What do we mean when we say Beautiful? http://www.hughlane.ie/lectures/lectures-past/2258-wolrdphilosophyday http://www.hughlane.ie/lectures/lectures-past/2258-wolrdphilosophyday World Philosophy Day

Friday 16 November, 1.30pm

What do we mean when we say Beautiful? Public lecture by philosophy teacher Dr Connell Vaughan (DIT).

"Perhaps the most common term we have to describe the art we admire and value as worthwhile is the term beautiful. Furthermore, we are inclined to explain our ideas of beauty in terms of true imitation (of nature), though this is increasingly less the case. Such changes point to the fact that this term has a rich and ancient history in the philosophy of art. For example, the question of where to locate beauty have been central to philosophy for millennia. Is it a property of the artwork, in the eye of the beholder or somewhere else?"

In this talk, Connell Vaughan will outline some of the ways that Western Philosophy has understood beauty, from ancient Greek ideas of mimicry, through classical ideas of reasoned judgements of beauty, to what could be called the contemporary abandoning of the idea of beauty. For good or ill, beauty is no longer the undisputed highest value of art and this is an opportunity to reflect on our contemporary approaches to thinking about art.
