Join us for a morning of exciting illustrated talks, conversations and performances by guests exploring themes arising from the exhibition Joseph Beuys: From the Secret Block to Rosc, open until 23 January at Hugh Lane Gallery. The Study Morning will be chaired by the exhibition's curator Logan Sisley.
Guest artists and speakers include Amanda Coogan, Jane Whitaker, Sir Norman Rosenthal, Maud Cotter and John Carson.

Guest speaker biographies:
John Carson is an artist who has wittily and provocatively explored the interface between high and low culture and who has sought to widen the audience for contemporary art practice. His work has utilized various media, contexts and strategies. He has presented live performances, made soundworks and CDs, broadcast work on television and radio, created installations, and both as a curator and artist, been involved in many types of ‘public art’ project. He has exhibited drawings, photographs, prints and sculpture in such venues as The Ulster Museum in Belfast, The Douglas Hyde Gallery in Dublin, The ICA in London, CCA in Glasgow, IKON Gallery in Birmingham, Perth Institute of Contemporary Art in Australia, The Aine Art Museum in Tornio Finland, PS1 in New York, New Langton Arts in San Francisco and The Mattress Factory in Pittsburgh.
He received his Bachelor of Fine Art Degree from The University of Ulster in Belfast in 1976 and his Master of Fine Arts Degree from California Institute of the Arts in 1983. From 1986 to 1991 he was Production Director of Artangel, a London-based organization which presented temporary artworks in public locations. He has been a visiting lecturer at various schools and colleges in Ireland, UK, Europe, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. He taught at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin, Ireland and at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London, England, where he was Course Director of the BFA program from 1999 to 2006. From 2006 to 2016 he was Head of the School of Art at Carnegie Mellon University. He is currently a member of the teaching faculty at Carnegie Mellon School of Art, Pittsburgh.
Coogan is a critically acclaimed artist working across the medias of live art, performance, sculpture and installation. The Irish Times have said, 'Coogan, whose work usually entails ritual, endurance and cultural iconography, is the leading practitioner of performance in the country'. The body, as a site of resistance, is the centrality of Coogan's work. Her expertise lies in her ability to condense an idea to its very essence and communicate it through her body. Time is a key material in Coogan's practice, building controlled instability into the fabric of her work. Her extraordinary work is challenging, provocative and always visually stimulating. Using gesture and context she makes allegorical and poetic works that are multi-faceted, and challenge expected contexts. Her 2015 live exhibition; I'll sing you a song from around the town, was described by Artforum as 'performance art at its best’. Coogan was recently elected to Aosdána. She is one of the most dynamic contemporary artists practising in live art.
Maud Cotter, lives and works in Cork, Ireland. She is co-founder of the National Sculpture Factory and a member of Aosdana, and is represented by domobaal gallery, London. Recent exhibitions of her work include a consequence of – a dappled world, a solo exhibition of a body of work developed from 2015, exhibited at the Hugh Lane Gallery in 2021, a consequence of – without stilling at Limerick City Gallery of Art, 2018, and a consequence of – a breather of air at The Dock, Carrick on Shannon, 2019, were part of that body of work in emergence. Sir Norman Rosenthal
Sir Norman Rosenthal is a prominent curator from the UK, where he organised numerous ground-breaking exhibitions at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London, and then from 1977 to 2007 as Exhibitions Secretary at the Royal Academy of Arts, London. In 1974 Rosenthal organised the exhibition, Art into Society; Society into Art: Seven German Artists, with art critic Christos Joachimides . It included the work of Beuys who was often present during the exhibition engaging audiences in discussion and sketching on to blackboards as a method of generating ideas and conversation; this resulted in the installation Directional Forces. Beuys contributed to two other significant group exhibitions organised by Rosenthal: Zeitgeist, At the Martin Gropius-Bau in Berlin in 1982, and German Art in the Twentieth Century at the Royal Academy of Arts, London in 1985. He also presented Joseph Beuys: The Secret Block for a Secret Person in Ireland, at the Royal Academy in 1999.
Jane Whitaker’s professional practice and experience includes as an artist, founder of the constitution & membership of the Yorkshire Art Space in 1976, currently sustained through purpose built project building/s in Sheffield City Centre UK and other venues in the region providing affordable studio and gallery space for Artists. Adult Education Tutor in Hull 1985 - 87. Workshop leader Outreach Performance Art and Photography for the long-term unemployed Kingston Upon Hull Education Authority.
Performance work includes solo and collaborative pieces in the late seventies and early eighties and the development and delivery of Feature Film script writing and further research and development commissions in 1989- 93 for Channel Four, BFI and Film Four. Goldsmiths Ual MA Theatre Arts Scheme, convener of the Critical writing seminar programme 2005 - 7.
University of Brighton, appointed to deliver Contextual and Critical Studies for Performance and Visual Art in the School of Arts and Communication 2003, 2012 - 16 College of Arts and Humanities and in the School of Art, Design and Media. 2018 - currently working part-time within the School of Humanities as a Senior Lecturer in Critical Studies Fine Art. Awarded Fellow of the Higher Education Academy FHEA in recognition of attainment set against the UK Professional Standards Framework for Teaching and Learning support in Higher Education in September 2017-18.
