Basic Talks: Irina Gheorghe

Irina Gheorghe studied painting and photography at the University of Arts Bucharest but ended up making work whose final form involved being physically present. She is interested in deviation as a way to twist this presence, in ambiguity as a language to address visitors from another world, and vagueness as a method to access this other world while never leaving this one. Irina confounded the artist duo The Bureau of Melodramatic Research to investigate how passions shape contemporary society, as well as our affective relationship to an awe-inspiring unhuman universe. She is also co-founder of artist-run publication Bezna (consistent darkness+ diffuse fear). Her projects were shown in WASP Bucharest, Savvy Contemporary Berlin, Pratt Manhattan Gallery New York, Times
Museum Guangzhou, WING Hong Kong, HOME Manchester, CAC Vilnius, National Museum of Contemporary Art Bucharest, bak Utrecht, mumok Vienna, National Dance Center Bucharest, DEPO Istanbul, Ujazdowsky Castle Warsaw, messagesalon Zurich, Center for Visual Introspection Bucharest,

As part of Dublin Gallery Weekend and in tandem with The Ocean After Nature exhibition at the Hugh Lane join us for Dopplereffekt - Live [Leisure System - Detroit].

The evening will commence with a talk from Stephen Rennicks (Drexciya Research Blog) and Richard Be (First Cut). Also appearing as part of this evening will be Sharon Phelan with a DJ performance & visual accompaniment. This special evening will culminate with a live set by Dopplereffekt.

Inimitable electro duo Dopplereffekt are one of the most mysterious, thrilling and consistently challenging entities in electronic music. Originated by Gerald Donald, one-half of Drexciya and responsible for era-defining releases under a variety of enigmatic aliases, the current iteration of the group includes Donald and fellow explorer To-Nhan. Together, the pair’s razor-sharp production and a peerless capacity for transportive soundscapes are as likely to reference concepts embedded in physics and biology as they are capable of moving crowded dancefloors. Dopplereffekt inhabit a unique contemporary sonic world, with a restless creativity and intense commitment to carving out their own musical space.

In recent years, the duo resurfaced on Berlin’s Leisure System label with 2013’s Tetrahymena EP, the wildly well-received split Hypnagogia 12” with Objekt and 2017’s Cellular Automata, their first LP in ten years since 2007’s Calabi Yau Space on Rephlex. Cellular Automata approaches mathematical growth and decay as an iterative process, with each data input considered individually relative to the overall model. The result represents one of the group’s boldest creative endeavors, defying expectations while remaining unmistakably Dopplereffekt.

Sharon Phelan [IRE] is an artist, musician and researcher working primarily with sound in site-specific contexts. Her practice includes sound installations, field recordings, audiovisual compositions, and collaborative performances with voice and electronics.

Basic Talks: Samuel Laurence Cunnane

Samuel Laurence Cunnane - November 10th - A recent BA Photography graduate of IADT, Dublin
(2011), Laurence Cunnane's work uses analogue photographic techniques, printed by hand by the artist.
He remains highly connected to the physicality of the production process, and quite tellingly, speaks of
his work in terms of “making” pictures, not “taking” them. His C-type prints are small in size, a side
effect of his traditional production methods, but one that resonates with the restrained, intimate nature of
the work. Recent solo exhibitions include Douglas Hyde Gallery, Dublin (2016); THEODORE:Art, New York and
Kerlin Gallery (both 2015). Projects and group exhibitions include Feature Fortnightly Presents, Kerlin
Gallery (2014); the screening Portfolio, Les Rencontres d'Arles, Arles, France (2012); Listen, Block T,
Dublin (2011); and The Invisible City, The Joinery, Dublin (2009).
