Schubert: Quintet in C major, D 956
The Irish Baroque Orchestra Chamber Soloists will present Schubert's powerful and moving string quintet in April, led by artistic director and Grammy-nominee, Monica Huggett.
Featuring the unusual combination of 2 cellos, 2 violins and viola, the quintet was completed in 1828 only a few short months before the composer's death, and is widely regarded as a masterpiece, with its evocative richness unmatched to date in this genre.
The IBO and its smaller ensemble, IBOCS, usually performs repertoire of the 17th and 18th centuries. However, the Schubert recital offers audiences a glimpse of Romantic Vienna - a rare chance to enjoy this tremendous music performed on period instruments as audiences in the 1830's would have heard it.
