Well-tempered Clavier, Recital 2
In 1722 Bach issued Book 1 of his Well-Tempered Clavier and for the past three centuries these 24 preludes and fugues have been essential repertoire for keyboard recitals and teaching. In order to mark the 300th anniversary, Malcolm Proud will play them over two recitals, each lasting about one hour and consisting of 12 preludes and fugues. He will perform them on harpsichord.
Johann Sebastian Bach: The Well-Tempered Clavier, Preludes and Fugues BWV 870-893
It was an idea only Bach could have conceived: to compose a collection of preludes and fugues for keyboard, circling through no fewer than 25 major and minor keys. Bach envisioned the book as a teaching aid ‘for the use and profit of the musical youth’, but since then it has become one of the most influential works in the history of Western classical music.
