Pigeons On The Grass Alas

Celebrating the contribution to music of the great American writer
Gertrude Stein and the far-reaching influence of the music of Erik Satie.

Selections from Virgil Thompson & Gertrude Stein’s opera Four Saints in Three Acts, joined by compositions featuring texts by Stein from CCI Artistic Director Paul Hillier and John Cage, alongside Thomas de Quincy’s eloquent meditation on Kant’s passing, set to music by Gavin Bryars. These choral works are complemented by solo piano pieces by Howard Skempton performed by the inimitable Miles Lallemant, who steps out from Chamber Choir Ireland’s ranks especially for this performance.

Jonathan Nangle’s Pause

Dublin composer Jonathan Nangle’s transcendent music for strings comes to life performed by Crash Ensemble, Ireland’s leading ensemble for adventurous new music. Pause is the debut album from a composer whose work draws on a carefully selected palette of ravishingly beautiful materials. This is music of serene focus; often fragile, always intricately woven. The album in its entirety will be performed at this concert.

Dearbhla Collins (pianist) will accompany a number of young singers from Veronica Dunne’s current stable at the Royal Irish Academy of Music and in turn they will share the platform with former students now enjoying busy performing careers.

Songs by Nadia Boulanger, Alma Mahler, Fanny Mendelssohn, Clara Schumann, Ilse Weber and Irish composers Elaine Agnew, Rhona Clarke and Bernadette Marmion performed by Sarah Shine, soprano; Gemma Ni Bhriain, mezzo-soprano; Patrick Hyland, tenor and Robert McAllister, bass baritone.

The Dublin Musical Saunter continues in the Coach House of Dublin Castle with concerts at 3.00 pm and 7.00 pm

Performed by The Quiet Club & crOw

(watch video here)

In December 2015 Ireland’s leading sound art collective The Quiet Club joined forces with crOw, one of the country’s most innovative improvising duos, to make a CD recording called ‘As the quiet crow flies’. This CD was released on Farpoint Recordings in summer 2016 (This is a great work of improvised music from a more unusual perspective - Frans de Waard, Vital Weekly) and, having enjoyed working together so much, the two duos agreed that performing as a quartet in a tour around the country is something we wanted to do. The Quiet Club is an internationally-acclaimed duo consisting of Danny McCarthy and Mick O’Shea, who use a range of analogue and digital electronic devices to produce sound art of great beauty and subtlety. crOw is an improvising duo incorporating saxophonist Cathal Roche and Ian Wilson on laptop, e-guitar and sound objects - this duo has a particular interest in spatializing sound and responding to acoustic and architectural properties of the spaces it performs in; audiences are invited to wander around during performances. When the two duos perform together, the result is a unique combination of influences and approaches; naturally, every tour performance will be different and tailored to a particular venue and audience.

Music from the World: The world of traditional and folk musics is truly inspiring and represents both inspiration and source for our concert today. Temenos will play a diverse selection of music spanning the centuries from the distant past to the emerging present.

Laoise O'Brien (recorders) and Paul Roe (clarinets), are musicians who enjoy unearthing old music and advancing new music respectively. Together they are exploring soundscapes, examining the shared features of their instruments, and discovering the commonality of their distant and distinctive repertoire.

Event Details

Huw Warren is a Welsh pianist, composer and educator whose work crosses and fuses many genres. His distinctive sound, innovative and eclectic music making has achieved an international reputation, awarding him the BBC Jazz award for Innovation, and the ACW Creative Wales Award. Equally at home crossing the often exclusive worlds of jazz, world and contemporary music, his compositions are known to move between quirky rhythmic grooves and a simple yet profound melodic beauty. Even at his most experimental, Warren’s music is fun and approachable. With the approaching release of his first solo album since ‘Infinite Riches in a Little Room’ in 2002, this concert will be an experience of new music inspired from a wide range of material.

performed by

Cathal Roche and Izumi Kimura

Possession is a 21st-century paean to the musical world we live in and its global cross-pollination of musical stimuli. This multi-movement work combines detailed, sometimes complex notation drawing upon many different musical styles with various kinds of improvisation – controlled, guided and free. It is both an ambitious musical journey across the globe – embracing indigenous music from India, Japan, North and South America, the Arctic Circle, Africa and Australia – and a showcase for the remarkable talents of Izumi Kimura and Cathal Roche, the only duo in Ireland equally at home in contemporary classical and improvised musics. (Ian Wilson, 2016)
