Africa Day Celebrations this May 02 May 2009
Africa Day, 24 May 2009 The gallery in collaboration with Irish Aid will be holding a number of events to celebrate Africa Day, a national celebration that takes place on the 24th May 2009! In June 2009 the gallery will be launching a book of African short stories for children called Horses and Tortoises. To celebrate the upcoming publication and Africa Day some of the African women from AkiDwA, the African Women’s Network, who were involved in the project will be telling their stories in various places across Dublin throughout May. Here’s what will be happening: Sunday 24 May, Africa Day @ Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane 12pm – 1pm – African themed poetry readings and African stories for all the family 3 - 4pm – African fabric design sketching, inspired by Yinka Shonibare @ Iveagh Gardens, Dublin Africa Day Celebrations, 12pm to 8pm. 2.30pm & 3.30pm – Interactive workshops with storytelling and origami animals No booking necessary. Other events: Saturdays, 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th May @ Irish Aid Volunteering and Information Centre, 27-31 Upper O’Connell St, Dublin 1 African storytelling and crafts workshops for children aged 4-10 Tales from Africa: 10.30am – 11.30am Art workshops 12pm – 1pm Workshop 1: 4-7 year olds Workshop 2: 8-10 year olds Booking essential.
