Art and the Outdoors: August Bank Holiday weekend

A Family-Friendly celebration of art, music, street spectacle and more!

Following on from its success last year our family friendly Art and the Outdoors en plein air celebration of art, music, street spectacle with the Dublin Circus Project, poetry bursts poets with Simon Costello, Eva Griffin, Enda Wyley and Peter Sirr in conjunction with Poetry Ireland and more is taking place again this year on Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 July, Noon-4pm with a special street closure in front of the Hugh Lane Gallery. Join us to explore your creativity outdoors with our artists and and celebrate the outdoors by creating a pop up paper blossom wildflower garden in the heart of the city.

12.15 Aisling Ennis – harp, Anna Cashell violin, 30thJuly 2022
Aisling Ennis and Anna Cashell present a programme of light classical music featuring Saint Saëns, Tedeschi and other popular classical works.
13.15 Éamonn Galldubh Trio - 30thJuly
Uilleann piper Éamonn Galldubh brings his fascinating exploration of pipes in the baroque era, performing music of Bach , Leclair, Handel as well as some traditional tunes accompanied by Rachel Factor (harpsichord) and Lioba Petrie (cello).
This trio ensemble seeks to explore the performance of baroque material by uilleann pipes and chamber ensemble, drawing on the historical precedent of baroque material being contained in early tutors for the instrument such as that of Farrell (1805) and private collections including that of piper Patrick O’Neill (1765-1832).
14.15 Botanic String Quartet 30th July 2022
Botanic String Quartet present a relaxed and friendly string quartet concert of popular songs suitable for the whole family. From the Beatles to the Weekend : the Cure to Coldplay, this is a performance for anyone who loves music.
15.15 Derek Copley Trio 30th July 2022
The Derek Copley trio is obsessed with the rhythms of both Irish and American dance tunes. A classic string band setup of banjo, fiddle and guitar, Derek Copley has made the seldom-endeavoured journey of incorporating jig rhythms into his clawhammer banjo playing, along with the trance-like fiddle tunes of American old time music.
Expect an innovative, hypnotic, fun, traditional dance music experience to take your feet tapping across the Atlantic and back!

12.15 Aisling Ennis - electric harp 31st July 2022
Having kept the online population engaged during lockdown with her regular ‘harp O’clock’ broadcasts harpist Aisling Ennis shows her energy and versatility in playing both classical repertoire and the electric harp improvisations using effects pedals and extended techniques.
13.15 Lioba Petrie and Abigail Smith Duo – Fragments 31st July
Fragments is a new body of work by Lioba and Abigail with cello, voice and other instruments. Fragments is the bringing together of ideas, seeds of musical thought then developing them and taking inspiration from their surrounding areas and their lives as mothers and musicians.

Drawing Out of Doors We invite you to look around you and sketch what you see! Our artists have plenty of ideas and tips for capturing nature, the outdoors, streetscapes and more. Drawing is a great way to discover more about the world around you. Art materials are supplied.
Embossed Print-Making Our artists will show you how to create a beautiful embossed print by pressing simple shapes onto special paper. Look for inspiration in the patterns around you or from nature when composing your ideas.
Pop-Up Wildflower Garden Join us to celebrate the outdoors by creating a pop-up wildflower garden with Jane Fogarty in the heart of the city. This workshop is suitable for all ages. We will use a variety of techniques to recreate some beautiful paper blossoms!
