Possessed

Possessed is presented in four episodes each relating to a different cultural expression of possession

Episode 1              Ecstasy
Episode 11            Witchcraft
Episode 111          Candoblè
Episode 1V            Tarantella


During the entr’actes to the four episodes the ensemble will perform a selection of folias, a dance form that literally means madness and was so named for the frenzy it caused in listeners. Possessed features music by Hildegard von Bingen, Guillaume Dufay, Martín y Coll and improvisations on 16th, 17th & 18th century Spanish, Italian and New World music. Possessed was commissioned and first performed in 2010 as part of the Galway Early Music Festival. Possessed is presented as a staged-concert, a theatrical format EX has employed to critical and popular acclaim. The production explores the ancient and universal phenomenon of possession through a series of cultural, historical and ritual manifestations. The performance features an ensemble of internationally celebrated early music specialists including, Caitríona O’Leary (Ireland), Clara Sanabras (Spain/UK), Paulina van Laarhoven (Netherlands), Steven Player (UK, Sweden), Harvey Brough (UK) and Andrea Piccioni (Italy).

The production is conceived by Ms.O’Leary and Mr. Fraad,
