Saturday 15 May 2021

Join us online to celebrate Drawing Day 2021 when we will be sharing some ideas suggested by our artists for you to try.

1. Artist Beth O'Halloran is encouraging you to take the time to look around you in her online art activity film which will be available to view here:

“All of us are watchers – of television, of time clocks, of traffic on the freeway – but few are observers. Everyone is looking, not many are seeing.” Peter M. Leschak

This online drawing activity with artist Beth O'Halloran is inspired by the idea of flaneurism– term for ‘strolling’ used by 19th century French poet Charles Baudelaire to identify an observer of modern urban life. Some flaneurs famously went walking around with a tortoise on a string to slow themselves down so they might pay better attention to what was around them. For this workshop, we will be asking you to notice and record a way in which you get from A to B – most likely a familiar route. We will ask you to notice how you orientate yourself in that place – familiar marks, shapes, architecture, foliage. We will look downwards, sideways and upwards. This film will be available to view via the Gallery's YouTube channel here and there is no need to register.

2.  Sketchbooks and Mark Making illustrated discussion for adults led by artist Ashleigh Downey.
Join artist Ashleigh Downey for this online Hugh Lane Drawing Day activity for adults when she will offer a discursive presentation on the role of sketchbooks, and an exploration into experimental mark making. This online session begins with an exercise in mindful mark-making, so do have some paper and pencil to hand. This online event will be presented via the Zoom online platform. Fee: €5, advanced booking required and to book a place via eventbrite please see here

3. Be inspired in your drawing by the shapes and forms of shadows cast by objects in the world around you with artist Megan Scott. This art activity film will be available to view on the Gallery's YouTube channel here and there is no need to register.
